Oops…

I’ve been using the garage for well over a year now and every time I pull in I marvel at the fact that I haven’t hit the freezer-until today. I’ve told RJ I need one of those tennis ball things that hit your windshield when you’ve pulled in far enough but he simple responds with “just pull in 8 inches past the weedwhacker.” Well, 8 inches from what, the front of my window, the back? The steering wheel? My head? But wait-am I slouching forward? So I usually just creep slowly forward and hope for the best. Sometimes I have to restart the car and pull forward a little more because the garage door can’t close but I’m ALWAYS conscious of the freezer-until today. I wasn’t on the phone, I wasn’t singing along to the radio but all of the sudden-thud. And I didn’t just nudge it. When RJ saw the damage he asked why I was “barreling” into the garage. I don’t know. I dented the freezer but not the car so that was good news and I thought that was the extent of the damage
But when I went out later I realized that I had jammed the hinge of the freezer a good 1.5 inches into the drywall creating this pleasing effect: Dang. It’s taken me 365 careful days of driving to keep my garage and freezer in pristine condition and only one to wreck it. Now when I drive into the garage I want to kick myself. At least I’m married to a guy who can drywall.

  1. this post had me rolling. mine– is not a freezer but a workbench. the exact same scenario, creeping forward until it seems good enough. why won’t they just hand a tennis ball for us!!!

  2. haha this is hilarious and not because you hit the freezer but because i go through this exact same thing every single day. I too have to inch myself forward. unfortunately we do not have a weedwacker for me to measure by. and dev will not hang a tennis ball either!! And I have indeed hit the freezer a few times. however, Dev was the first one to hit it so I dont feel as bad. And I have not managed to wreck the dry wall that I can tell.. Thanks for posting. I’m glad I’m not the only one with this problem!

  3. That’s why we don’t park in our garage- I would wreck everything. No garage experience, but I definitely have experience in the driveway from a place down under back when we lived in Euless. Wrecked my car several times on that stupid thing, hit my father in law’s car, then tore my bumper off another time. Good times. Sorry about your freezer! 😦

  4. That’s something I would do. I once hung on our towel rack in our bathroom (don’t know why!); naturally it ripped off the wall.

  5. It’s okay. You know I’ve crashed both of our cars into non-moving objects this year. So, I’ve still got you beat.

  6. Dang, that’s rough! At least the car’s doing well still. And it’s true, at least Reeshard can drywall. It’ll get him moving his chub-a-lub-lub along (make sure you tell him I said that). πŸ™‚

  7. This story made me remember the time I backed out of the garage and heard a crash. I looked over my should and couldn’t see anything and then I went to get out of the car and noticed I hadn’t shut the door of the car! I backed out with the door open and it crunched like an accordian as it hit the opening of the garage! Now that is stupid!!

  8. Grandpa said be happy that the freezer hinge didn’t hit a stud or you may have had a warped lid. At least the air bag didn’t pop open. πŸ™‚

  9. I too have had to get out to see if I am far enough in, and then restart the car to pull in further! I finally just got a pen and made a little mark on the wall and I just know to line the edge of my window with it. that gives me enough room on both ends. and, if i did hit something it would be my boxes of decoration, not a freezer, and then i would be really sad!!!

  10. You’re pregnant so you can blame everything on that. Ryan did the same thing in our garage, but there wasn’t a freezer there so now there’s just a huge dent in the garage. And he doesn’t dry wall. I hope that makes you feel a little better!
